When did you first join the ski club? We thought we were going to move to Nashville before we actually did, so I joined the ski club in 2022, before we’d moved from Oklahoma City. I wanted to get an idea of what kind of trips and activities were available to me in Nashville, as I’d been a member of the Oklahoma City ski club and had gone on a few trips with them.
Favorite ski resort? I skied at Vail with my father perhaps the first year it opened, or certainly soon after. Our family had been skiing in New England while I was growing up, skied at Aspen a few times, but once Vail opened, it became my family’s favorite resort. My parents, sisters and ultimately all our spouses and some of their families, kids and grandkids have skied there virtually every year for the past 45 years. Other favorite areas of mine are those operated by Canadian Mountain Holidays, a heli-ski operation.

Hometown: We moved quite a bit growing up. I consider myself from New Jersey.  Born and lived in Totowa/Glen Ridge (Metro NYC) in early years followed by early elementary school in Topsfield, Massachusetts (first time on skis!) and later elementary school in Troy, Ohio.  Returned to Mountainside, NJ (appropriate for a skier, but did you know that it is the ONLY town named Mountainside in the country? Look it up – it’s true!) for high school.
When did you first join the ski club? 2022
Favorite ski resort? All of them for various reasons.  HoliMont in Ellicottville NY where I was a long time member and brought my children into the skiing. Hometown: Nashville is the only hometown I've ever had, and I moved here in 1981 as a bride. Growing up I lived in 8 states, 11 small towns and one city--Denver, where my family lived from 1970 to 1975 and I learned to ski. My father was an exploration geologist in the mining industry. I was born in Nyack, New York, while he was on a research mission mapping the ocean floor off the East Coast with sonar,  we lived in towns near mines in Georgia, Tennessee, Colorado (I lived in Gilman, CO, above where Vail is now, from 1956 to 1957 before the resort was built), New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Texas and Idaho.
When did you first join the ski club? March 2022
Favorite ski resort? Telluride. I first skied there in 1980, when only the town side of the area existed. It's a very different place now.

What’s the best trip (traveling wise) you ever had?
I backpacked through Europe for 2 months at 25, right before I got married, using Eurail and Britail passes & staying in hostels. I was traveling in the dead of winter and most others staying in hostels were from the Southern Hemisphere, because it was summer for them, so I learned a lot about places I didn't even visit.
I spent 2 weeks in China traveling with my daughter and 17 other students at Hume Fogg and two of their teachers in 2008. We visited Beijing, Xian (where the terra cotta warriors were excavated), Lijiang, in the foothills of the Himalayas, and Shanghai, right before the 2008 Olympics.
My husband and I went to Iceland twice in the mid-1980s. The second trip, we flew to the island of Heimaey and climbed a cindercone mountain that was only 14 years old--the island had been evacuated during a volcanic eruption in 1973 that lasted a year.
The first 10 years we were married, my parents were living in Reno, NV, and we'd fly to Reno, borrow one of their cars, visit San Francisco, and drive up and down the California coast. Those were wonderful trips, and Point Lobos State Park is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?
Paris. I could take the train to ski, eat wonderful food on a daily basis I didn't cook, and visit museums to my heart's content.

Are you a member of any other clubs or organizations?
I'm in a dinner club of more than 25 years started by a friend I met when we were work colleagues at Hospital Corp. of America in the mid-1980s.

Our pound puppy, Wallace, is 8. He was labeled a "terrier mix" by our vet, but we think he has some husky. Our cats, Artemis, Xiong Mao (aka Shongie) and Dexter are foster failures.

What is your favorite hobby?
Gardening. My daughter just helped me get our (tiny) yard in Cherokee Park certified as a bird habitat; we've planted native plants & landscaped the entire yard--no more grass.

I've seen 8 Supreme Court justices and 2 attorneys general speak.

Hometown: I was a Royal Air Force Brat, so I grew up in a lot of places.  I have good memories of Stanmore in North London (age 4-10), and the Rhondda Valley, South Wales (age 12-14).  I identify most with Shipdham and Swaffham, in Norfolk (England), from 14-18.  I went to London University and lived in the London area till I came to the US in January 1980.
When did you first join the ski club? I learnt to ski in Vermont while working in Boston, MA in the 1980/81 season and fell in love with the sport.  I have often said it changed me from being a workaholic to a skiaholic.  So when I moved to Raleigh, NC in 1981 I immediately joined the Raleigh Ski Club.  I came to Nashville in 1982, and went to a ski club event at the Nashville Auditorium in November 1982 and immediately signed up.  I couldn't skate but I noticed a couple of pretty girls on the ice (Jean and Susan), got introduced to one of them in 1984 and married her on 1st February 1987.  On 7th February we went on a ski club trip to Vail and spent our honeymoon in Vail with 45 of our closest friends (we did have our own private unit).
Ski club offices held: I was on the NSC Board for 2 years 1984-5, and was elected President in 1986 and served 3 terms till 1989.  While I had done a lot of technical business presentations, I had never spoken in front of a group of people and directed a meeting.  It really taught me a lot.
Favorite ski resort? When I came to Nashville I was a beginner/intermediate skier, and would do the NASTAR races whenever I could.  I took ski lessons often and gradually my skiing improved.and I began to enjoy the adrenaline rush of skiing black and double black runs.  So I have a number of favorite ski areas that have given me intense feelings of satisfaction after skiing a difficult run well.  There is also a wonderful sense of comradeship when skiing together in a small group.  In fact it is the friends I have made that make these places special: Vail, Big Sky, Jackson Hole, Beaver Creek, Snowbird, Park City.

Bess Gormley

Hometown: San Bernardino, CA (though I’ve lived in Nashville most of my life)

When did you first join ski club: 2013

Ski club offices held:  Board Member

Favorite ski resort: Steamboat

What’s the best trip (traveling wise) you ever had?

Hard to pick but ski trips are always fun. My first ski trip was with a group of teens when I was 15 to Park City. It was my Christmas present and it was SO MUCH FUN! Tom and I honeymooned in Kitzbuhel, Austria where we were stranded after the slopes closed and had to hike and ski our way home by moonlight. Very romantic. We were too poor in both time and money to ski for years after. Our first family ski trip was to Breckenridge for my 40th birthday. I think we tried to go every year after that. We joined the ski club when the kids grew up and made fast ski buddies with whom we’ve shared many a great trip.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

Steamboat? Or maybe somewhere safely exotic in Spanish-speaking Central or South America. I’d like to learn to surf – so let’s go with Costa Rica. Tom could golf.

What’s your favorite seat on an airplane?

The window! And not necessarily in first class, though nice.

How many countries have you visited outside the US?

Several, England and much of continental Europe, though I’m still missing the Iberian & Balkan Peninsulas, the northern countries, and the rest of United Kingdom. We’ve been to several countries in Central America but never South America. And let’s not forget the 18 days in China. I realllly want to visit Spain.

What is your favorite zoo animal?

Chimps! Or giraffes! Or bears! Maybe anteaters. (Have you seen their tongues?) It’s hard to pick.  The zoo is fun on a cool fall day!

What is your favorite candy or treat?

All treats are tempting, especially good chocolate. The Sees Candy stores call my name when I walk by in the airports. Sees makes the best chocolate candies.

What is your favorite dessert?

I do like good chocolate. And anything with eggs, butter, cream and sugar combo. I also like grapefruit for dessert.

What is your favorite hobby?

No real hobbies. I’m not organized enough to have a hobby. I like needlework and I used to sew, but not so much lately.

What are your other favorite sports to participate in?

Sports?? I try and stay in shape for skiing! This includes walking, hiking, swimming and a few strength moves. Any sport that includes a ball eludes me. Am I am not competitive in the least. I don’t want anybody to lose.

What are your favorite sports to watch?

Ice skating and water polo. My sporting interests are not quite mainstream.

What crazy activities do you dream of trying someday?

Surfing - Not so crazy but I’m running out of time!

Do you have any hidden talents? What can you do?

I have no talents, hidden or otherwise. I play piano by laboriously practicing what old dead white men have written down.  I can’t get the rhythm for anything more exciting. I sing in an excellent choir at church but it’s hard work and it’s excellence belongs to the attributes of others.

Where and when would you time-travel, if it were possible?

It depends on the rules: Would they know I didn’t belong? Would I have the right clothes? Would I be in danger? Could I be younger? Could I be male? This is why I like to read a good book, historical or fictional. Time travel is endlessly possible with a good book.

What show on Netflix did you binge watch embarrassingly fast?

Last one – Queen’s Gambit series in 4 or 5 days I don’t watch a lot of TV but I tend to binge when I get hooked.

What movie can you rewatch over and over again?

I will watch It’s a Wonderful Life every year if I can find it.

What is your favorite holiday?

Thanksgiving.  It’s good family time.

What is your favorite job you’ve ever had?

I am a lucky woman to have a job with great people and support. That makes all the difference.
