We kicked off summer by taking a kayak trip to Burgess Falls on June 22nd.  The falls are amazing and it was nice to approach them from the water instead of our usual access by hiking!

On Wednesday, June 18, we took ourselves out to the ballpark where we enjoyed a game between our Nashville Sounds and the Iowa Cubs.  Hot dogs, cold beverages, a warm summer evening - it was a great time!  There are more photos in the Photo Gallery.

Michael Janusek

Hometown: I was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois and I spent my time growing up between Chicago  Heights, Illinois with my extended family and Itasca, Illinois where I went to High School.
When did you first join the ski club? 2023 in preparation for the 2024 Banff, Canada trip
Ski club offices held: foot soldier
Favorite ski resort? Mammoth Mountain, California  It is my favorite because it is only a 7-hour drive from my home and it offers all of the variety and challenges I need to keep me "snow happy".  The downside is the erratic weather in the Sierras, you never know if you are going to show up to 2 feet of fresh powder or a life-altering week-long blizzard that moves in off the Pacific Ocean.

What’s the best trip you ever had?
My favorite trip was with my father and my brother to Oaxaca, Mexico in the mid-1990s. My brother was a South American archaeologist at Vanderbilt, so I got a private guided tour of all of the archaeological sites from Mexico City and Puebla down to Oaxaca City and the coast of Oaxaca.  The trip to Oaxaca led to more opportunities for me to study Spanish and now I work as a Spanish-language court interpreter.

Do you have any pets? What are their names?
I have two cats that my son and I have raised since they were newborn kittens. One is an orange tabby/martian oddball named Stampy Longhead. Our other cat is a loving grey short-haired domestic named Notch. The names of our cats were derived by my son from the English creators of the MineCraft Game.

What is your favorite hobby?
1st Favorite Hobby: My first favorite life-long hobby is railroading.  This includes everything from riding the prototypes, reading up on railroad history to modeling the miniature trains at home. Currently I have found a wonderful expression for this love by riding railcarts that are pedaled like bicycles upon abandoned railroad lies.  This is a new hobby and I have been riding on railroad lines from the Santa Paula-Fillmore line in California to a variety of different railroads in the mountains of Oregon and the Puget Sound area of Washington.

2nd Favorite Hobby: My second favorite hobby is swing dancing. I am lucky that in San Diego I can find classes and dances in all of the major forms of swing.  These are: Lindy Hop, Balboa and Shag. I am naturally uncoordinated so any step I make without falling is a step in the right direction!  I also really love swing dancing because I used to be a jazz musician and all of the music that is played for swing dancing is the music I used to play professionally as a trombonist.

Do you have any hidden talents? What can you do?
Nobody knows this except my immediate neighbors, but I am a full-fledged home coffee roaster. I focus on roasting the best coffees from Central America, Colombia and Peru. I buy the raw coffee beans from a supplier who travels around the world to find the best coffee crops. Then I spend hours and hours tinkering with my roasting equipment until I create the best coffee flavor for each type of coffee bean that I purchase.

What show did you binge watch embarrassingly fast?
I did and sometimes still do binge watch episodes of Seinfeld.  I find the show extremely humorous.

Who is your favorite cartoon character and why?
Sponge Bob Square Pants. I love the assortment of characters and the dry humor.

During the pandemic did you learn a new skill or improve an old one?
I used all of my indoor down-time to practice the lindy hop swingout with all of its variations. It is the base move for lindy hop dancing. All of that practice comes in handy now when I am out dancing.
