Grindelwald Trip Report
by Sara T. Shamblin
After being postponed in 2021 due to COVID, our trip to Grindelwald finally happened Feb 4-13. We took a group of 28 skiers and sightseers to one of the most beautiful alpine villages, Grindelwald, Switzerland. We were fortunate to have great weather the entire week and enjoyed many days of skiing, sledding, walking and sightseeing.
We stayed in the Hotel Belvedere in Grindelwald, which has been in the Hauser family since 1904. Each morning we had a huge breakfast buffet and in the evenings they served a 4 course gourmet dinner, which we relaxingly enjoyed and took time to talk and catch up with each other's daily activities. The hotel has a spa area with saunas, heated swimming pool, a salt water whirlpool and an outdoor hot tub. There was also a bar in the hotel where many of us gathered to socialize each evening. The view from the hotel balcony of the Eiger and Wetterhorn mountains was amazingly beautiful. Each night before and during dinner we were treated to beautiful piano music by a relative of the hotel owner, and one night his cousins came with their alphorn and accordion.
Many of us skied the many runs in the Jungfrau Region, 132 miles of trails with many trains, gondolas, and chairlifts getting us to the slopes quickly. The ski runs offered something for everyone with many interconnected areas offering gentle slopes and steep drops, and were generally well groomed. Stopping off for lunch at a restaurant on the slopes listening to Swiss music was a treat! Sledding was also a sport enjoyed by some, it's called "sledging" there and you could rent sleds and go down the designated trails. Most of us managed to make it to the Jungfraujoch, the "Top of Europe" where the train took us inside the mountain to arrive at Europe's highest railway station with a view of the Aletsch Glacier, snow covered mountains and a view down into the Interlaken area. Some of us enjoyed a Swiss lunch while overlooking the glacier. We arranged for 3 day-long excursions for our participants. One day we went to the medieval town of Gruyeres and visited a cheese factory and the Callier chocolate factory. Another day we went to Thoune City, did some sightseeing, took a boat ride on the Thunersee and then visited Spiez and Interlaken. The third day of excursions saw us off to Lucerne, Brienz, and a visit to a spectacular waterfall. Some in our group took the opportunity to travel by train to nearby towns and do even more sightseeing.
We all had a very busy and full week and were exhausted by the time we boarded our return flight to the US. Everyone agreed that this was a fantastic trip, one we hope to repeat!
