Copper Mountain Trip Report
By Bob Beranek

We had 33 members from across the country join us on our hunt for corduroy and powder at the IKON pass-based Copper Mountain.  Travel was quite smooth back and forth as we had a bunch of sunny bluebird days which made the roads a breeze to navigate.  Getting into the rooms seemed to be a bit of a challenge as the folks at Copper Mountain weren’t as organized as one would hope and our eight condos were spread out over four buildings, but at the end of the day all was well.  Thank goodness we had porterage; that really helped!  We had to share condo fridge space for a bit as we waited for all the rooms to be ready but the group lunch we had at Eagle BBQ helped us get in the mountain state of mind with some smoked meats and mac and cheese at the base of the mountain.

Right up until the day before we left for the trip, Copper Mountain had gotten the most snow of all the Colorado resorts until Steamboat surpassed them the night before we got there.  This set up the mountain so that it was 99% open which was great for all to practice their carving skills and powder turns.  It awesomely turned out to be a week of mostly bluebird days which led to lots of great visibility, pictures and fun for all.  On Monday, we got a dusting of fresh snow in the evening that freshened up the runs a touch, but it was the only snow we got all week.  There was a small group of us that went to Sauce on Copper which turned out to be a really good Italian restaurant right in the same building of the Passage Point condos.  I highly recommend the Lemon Butter Trout dish; the potatoes were perfectly buttery and the fish was delectably delicate.  The Chicken Parmesan was also enjoyed by a few others that said it was really tasty.

After another great day of skiing Tuesday, the whole group took the free shuttle into Frisco and ate at Vinnie’s Euro American Cuisine.  There were two options for appetizers: a Caesar Salad or Avocado Bruschetta that turned out to be a big hit.  Who knew avocado on bruschetta could be so good?  We had three entrée options to choose from: Lemon Butter Trout with Risotto, Chicken Marsala and Duck Confit.  We heard many compliments about the food; the long time it took to arrive was the only downside of the meal.  The dessert options were Tiramisu and a Flourless Chocolate Tart, again, delicious!!

On Thursday, after yet another bluebird day on the mountain, oh the humanity, the ski gods were shining down on us with such pretty blue skies.  Lift lines got busier with the $99 special that Copper ran for Thursdays so there were more people to dodge on the mountain but that’s ok, we all survived.  The clan headed back into Frisco for another great group dinner at Hacienda Real.  The homemade salsa was the bomb and the dishes were enormous, literally, like serving platters instead of dinner plates.  We all got to order off the menu and the guys serving us were very quick about getting drinks and food out so hats (or sombreros) off to them for great service and food.

I know it’s getting really boring to hear that we had more sunny days for Friday and Saturday but yup, our weather luck kept its streak going.  On Friday, a majority of the group met up at Jack’s for some Après fun listening and dancing to Lefty Lucy and the stars of the night were Barb and Jim Gosler for getting most of us out dancing.  It was such a blast, and we even witnessed a shot ski happen that elevated the vibes of the night even more.  Those who didn’t come out missed a heck of a good time.  Saturday evening capped off our lovely week with a pizza party with a variety of pies from Nowhere Pizza.  The pizza was really solid and that’s coming from a former Chicago guy, but what do I know about pizza 😊?

Overall, it was a terrific week of skiing, great food, awesome company, new friends and blue sky energy that didn’t stop.  I want to give a special shout out to my partner in crime, Anne Wilkins for a killer job organizing the group dinners and providing everyone with a personalized memento to remember the trip by, it was a nice touch.  I hope everyone enjoyed the trip as much as we did!!

Mountain enthusiasts, come join your fellow ski club friends at the beautifully snowy Copper Mountain Resort in what will be our most budget-friendly trip of the 2024-2025 winter season.  Our trip will be Sunday-Sunday February 23 - March 2, 2025 and we fly non-stop to Denver.  Upon arrival we'll take a charter bus up I-70 to the resort in just under two hours with a grocery and liquor stop along the way for all the necessary provisions.  The mountain is laid out perfectly with natural divisions for the level of difficulty based on your abilities meaning that there are large segments of green runs, blue runs and black runs to make navigation easy.  There is plenty of terrain for all abilities; this mountain has it all!

We will stay at the Center Village Condos at the base of the mountain just steps away from the lifts and they are 2 BR/2 BA units. The village has some great restaurant options and we also have access to a shuttle to take us into the town of Frisco for some additional dining and shopping options.

Copper Mountain has 2,538 skiable acres with 24 total lifts and 157 trails to explore and find your favorite.  Hopefully many of you have already picked up your IKON passes but if not, that's OK too as we have some affordable rates for lift tickets you can purchase with the trip.

We will have a welcome reception when we arrive as well as two delectable group dinners where we will enjoy some great food, share stories, maybe crack a joke or two and get to know each other better.
