MammothTrip Report

The Nashville Ski Club returned to Mammoth Mountain for the first time since 2018, and it was as good as we remembered! We had 25 members (eventually) gather to take advantage of the over 500 inches of snow this season, which is the most snowfall for any resort in the world.

Most of us had never seen that much snow piled anywhere, and were constantly taken aback when we saw new comparisons of how much they had. Things like snow piled up to the second floor balconies (sorry first floor people!) with windows covered by plywood to protect them from the snow. Also, snow was regularly piled more than 10 feet higher than the trucks/SUVs parked on the street!

Thankfully the main group did not have any travel issues getting out there and we were able to take advantage of the welcome breakfast on Sunday. Guest service director, Anna Allen, answered questions for our group and the Knoxville Ski Club who was there at the same time. As an aside, Anna Allen is the subject of a new documentary called “Buried”, about her survival of the 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche where she survived for five days under tons of snow.

We had three groups take the three hour tour of the mountain where the mountain hosts relayed history of the mountain and showed us their favorite runs and how to get around the 3500 acres and 175 trails.

Sunday night into Monday we received a nice 4-8 inches of snow to give us all a little “pow pow” for our efforts, and with the low number of skiers during the week we were finding powder stashes well into Tuesday!

Wednesday night Allison led our merry band of skiers to the group dinner at Morrisons where everyone enjoyed wonderful meals and specialty desserts! And thanks to Anita Fowler for letting us know when the trolley was approaching so we weren’t waiting out in the cold for its arrival, or worse, missed it and have to wait another 45 minutes for the next pass!

Friday night we wrapped up the week with the “leftover” party and had some wonderful food and enjoyed each others company while telling stories about the adventures of the week.

Saturday was a mostly uneventful day of travel back to Nashville, with a surprise guest appearance from Kelly Ginn in Dallas coming home from a work trip.

Thanks to all the trip participants who made this a great time for all and look forward to traveling with you all again!

For our second trip of the year we'll head out west to California and Mammoth Mountain. We'll fly into Reno, Nevada (RNO) where we'll board a motorcoach to take us to the resort after a grocery stop.

We'll be staying at the Juniper Springs Condominiums, located near the Eagle Express Lift and Eagle Lodge at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. All condos are 2-bedroom/2-bath and offer king / twin twin bedding.

An extensive free shuttle bus system makes it easy to reach the Canyon & Main Lodges of Mammoth Mountain, the Mammoth Village and many other spots. The Panorama Gondola runs from the Main Lodge to the 11,053’ Summit where you can lunch, sight-see, and enjoy gorgeous views of the Sierras. You can get off at the half-way point and ski blue and black runs or keep going to the top and ski double black diamond runs.

There will be a welcome party night of arrival, one group dinner, a farewell potluck, and $100 resort credit. Additional activities such as snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing, etc. will be planned, details TBD.
